Do you want to know what is the easiest pets to take care of? Dogsitting is fairly easy, so could the answer be dogs? Low-maintenance pets do not exist. “I prefer ‘lower’ versus ‘low-maintenance’ because assuming responsibility for any living animal’s well-being is a very big commitment,” explains veterinarian Dana Varble, DVM, chief veterinary officer at the North American Veterinary Community. Almost any animal, including apartment dogs, fluffy cats, attractive ferrets, colorful reptiles, and even low-maintenance canines, can have health issues, particularly if not properly cared for. As a result, care will become more complicated (and therefore more expensive).

Any sort of animal should have a yearly examination at the vet, and nowadays, there is health care for almost any pet. “There are board-certified aquatic veterinarians who will gladly perform surgery on your goldfish, and I have seen hamsters that have gone for CT scans,” says veterinarian Matthew McCarthy, DVM, proprietor of Juniper Valley Animal Hospital in Middle Village, New York. “So it’s worth noting that everything is a low-maintenance pet until it’s not.”

Keeping that in mind, animal experts recommended these low-maintenance dogs. None require the same level of grooming and hair maintenance as a puppy. Many may not require constant, hands-on care. Most have manageable environments and feeding requirements. Let’s delve in and explore the easiest pets to take care of!

Eastern Newt

Talk about certified kid-friendly: Dr. McCarthy had these little fellows as a kid and advises them to prospective pet owners who don’t have a lot of time to devote to animal care. They are some of the easiest pets to take care of, you won’t need to pay for dogsitting. These low-maintenance pets are only five inches long and can survive for ten to fifteen years. “They can be kept in a small aquarium and typically don’t need a heated tank as long as your home is at a comfortable temperature,” he said. If your residence is on the cool side, or you simply want to create a newt paradise, a 10-gallon tank with heat and light would suffice.

Newts will consume a variety of live foods, such as earthworms, or a commercial amphibian diet. Their slippery skin acts as a germ barrier, so they prefer to be looked at rather than touched. And here’s what your pet retailer may not tell you: Dr. McCarthy recommends getting an Eastern newt because many western newts secrete a strong poison that you don’t want to deal with.

Marine crabs are unlawful pets and should be kept at the beach. However, land hermit crabs are available in pet stores. To maintain a warm and humid habitat, you will need to purchase a hermit crab tank, an under-tank heat pad, and a large water dish. From there, the creatures are simple and affordable to care for. Hermit crabs are quite gregarious and prefer to be active in groups and at night. “Since caring for a few hermit crabs really isn’t any more difficult than caring for one, having multiple crabs is recommended,” Dr. McCarthy said. With proper care, these small party animals can survive for five to fifteen years.

Norway Rat

Are rats one of the easiest pets to take care of? It most certainly is! This rat is the same type that roams city streets, foraging through garbage and generally causing havoc. Surprisingly, they make excellent low-maintenance pets. (If the thought of a rat doesn’t absolutely terrify you out.) Just remember one thing: never rescue one from the streets because it might carry and spread leptospirosis, a disease that is harmful to both humans and dogs. Instead, contact a pet rat breeder.

“They make great pets and will chill out with you on your lap while you read, watch television, or work on the computer,” Dr. McCarthy said. The more time you spend with them, the kinder and friendlier they become. They’re an excellent choice for those who are allergic to dogs and cats. He recommends getting two since they prefer living with a roommate with no coed accommodations unless you want to get into the breeding business. You won’t spend much time cleaning up after them. Norway rats are as fastidious as cats. A large wire cage with a hiding box, an exercise wheel, and food keeps these entertaining rats happy.

Goldfish

Among low-maintenance pets, the humble goldfish may be one of the cheapest and easiest pets to take care of. In return, it gives a significant health benefit. Numerous studies have found that observing fish is connected with lower blood pressure. Furthermore, fish are easy to communicate with and will not object if you share these hilarious fish jokes with them. Goldfish flourish with a tank companion, so consider getting two. “They are more tolerant of fluctuations in water quality and temperature than many other fish,” Dr. Varble notes.

However, they produce a lot of waste, so if you don’t want to have to change the water every few days, invest in a filtered tank with plants to hide behind and aquarium gravel. According to Dr. Varble, goldfish are tough and can live for 10 to 30 years, so you’ll have lots of opportunities to redecorate their tank.

If you’re not a morning person, the adorable Syrian hamster may be the ideal pocket pet for you. They are nocturnal, living their greatest lives at night. “Syrian hamsters are generally low-maintenance pets, quiet, tame enough to hold although a gentle touch is needed and fun to watch, especially on their exercise wheel,” Dr. McCarthy said. As one of the most gentle hamster breeds, they appreciate being touched, but they must be handled on a daily basis to become acclimated to your touch. Their cage is easy to clean because they do their business in one spot. Provide an exercise wheel and a toy tunnel, but no other hamsters. Some pet combinations are incompatible, and this is one of them. “These hamsters are one of the most reclusive animals in the wild, making them extremely territorial, and as such, they should always be kept alone. If not, you will fully comprehend the phrase cage match,” explains Dr. McCarthy.

Budgerigar

Looking for someone to chat with? A budgerigar, often known as a budgie, is the chatty feathered companion you’ve been looking for.. A pet secret you may not know: Although they mimic rather than communicate, they can be taught to respond to cues and spoken directions. “Budgies are the most popular of the 115 species of small parrots known as parakeets, likely due to their lower purchase price and minimal maintenance,” said Dr. McCarthy. A large cage with food, water, a perch, and a few noisy toys with shiny surfaces will keep budgies chanting your praises.

Plecostomus

A self-cleaning pet is the epitome of little maintenance. That’s why pet lovers adore the plecostomus, a fish that can assist you clean its tank. These resilient fish, sometimes known as algae eaters, suckerfish, or pleco, can survive for up to 15 years. “They are actually a group of catfish species and can tolerate a wide variety of water temperatures and conditions in a tank, and come in a variety of colors and sizes,” Dr. Varble said. Their duty is to clean the tank’s bottom and remove any algae. They do a great job, but you’re still responsible for cleaning the tank on a regular basis. If you’re looking for a tank mate for your goldfish, the pleco is a clean and tranquil option, especially if you choose the smaller Bristlenose pleco, which grows to be three to five inches long. Plecos enjoy algae, and sinking algae wafers guarantee that they have plenty of food in the aquarium.
